Bank Accounts for foreign nationals living in South Africa

Opening up a bank account is very important in our day to day life. Almost most of everything we need and use in daily life needs some sort of transaction. In this century, we are dropped off at a time when money is a medium of payment.

Everyone needs money to make purchases every day.  This is where a bank account comes in. Everyone needs a bank account at some point. This is by no choice, whether you want or not, you need an account at some point. At least if it’s not for saving money, it would definitely be someone else trying to pay you!

Opening up a bank account for foreign nationals can be hard in some countries for millions of reasons and therefore South Africa is not exclusive.  It is hard for forei9gn citizens to open up bank accounts in South Africa.

This does not only affect the foreign nationals but also the Country as well. This literally lags the foreign citizen behind and lets them no choice but rather sleep on their talents or if not, fail to reach their full potential.

There are many banks in South Africa that actually help foreign nationals get access to banking as long as they have Documents needed. These banks include the Following.

  • FNB
  • Nedbank
  • Absa
  • Standard bank
  • Access Bank

Access bank goes extra mile and helps foreign citizens who have a passport copy and proof of resident absolutely. These I believe will benefit many foreign hardworking nationals reach their potential.

Once you have your own account, you can be able to make decisions accordingly unlike when you have to ask you colleague or buddy open up an account on your behalf. A lot can happen in that scenario and guess what, you have nowhere to go unless if you had a written document about the arrangement.  A survey study that was taken at Yo swift shows that over 37% of foreign nationals living in South Africa have fallen victim in this kind of arrangement.

It is always a good idea to do banking on your own instead of trusting someone you just met however desperate you may be. Please refer to banks above in order to open up a bank account as  a foreign national in South Africa.

Thank you for passing by and reading this piece.
